What is in a Disc Golf Starter Set?

When you're just starting out in disc golf, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the variety of discs out there, even the ones in starter sets. Whether you're a complete newbie or just looking to improve your game, understanding the basic types of discs in a disc golf set can make all the difference. Each disc serves a specific purpose on the course, and knowing when to use which one will help you get the most out of your throws. Let's break down the essentials: putters, midrange discs, and drivers.

Putters: Precision for the Win
Putters are your go-to discs for short-range shots, particularly when you’re close to the basket. Just like in traditional golf, the putter is used to seal the deal and finish the hole. These discs are designed to fly slower and more predictably, making them perfect for controlled, accurate throws.
Putters usually have a rounded, blunt edge which gives you more control and less distance compared to other discs, but this is exactly what you need when you're aiming for precision. While they’re not built for speed or distance (unless you are Anthony Barela), putters are essential when you're just a short distance away from scoring that birdie or par.
At Local Discs, we stock a range of quality putters from local brands like RPM Discs and OZDG, whose EVO putter is a fantastic disc to help you improve your short game.

Midrange Discs: Versatility in Flight
Midrange discs are the jack-of-all-trades in your disc golf set. As the name suggests, they’re used for shots that are too long for a putter but don’t require the full power of a driver. Midranges provide a balance between distance and control, making them incredibly versatile. They can be used for a variety of shots, whether you need to throw through tight wooded areas or make a controlled approach to the basket. Though they get plenty of throws off the tee pad too!
What makes midrange discs special is their ability to handle a wide range of shots with ease. They aren’t too fast, so they’re still easy to control, but they can carry a decent amount of distance when thrown well. A great example of a midrange disc is The Wonder by Loop Discs, designed to give you that smooth, straight flight when you need it most.

Drivers: Maximum Distance
When it comes to pure distance, drivers are your best friend. Designed for long-range shots, drivers come with sharper, more aerodynamic edges that allow them to cut through the air and fly farther. There are different types of drivers, but generally, they’re divided into two categories: fairway drivers and distance drivers.
-
Fairway drivers: These are easier to control and are perfect for shots that require both distance and accuracy.
-
Distance drivers: These are the fastest and most challenging to control but can cover serious ground. Distance drivers are ideal for long, open shots where you need maximum range. Advanced players can achieve impressive flight paths with these discs, but we often recommend beginners start with a slower disc to avoid frustration, injury, or losing it in a pond.
Disc Stability and Flight Numbers
While we won’t get too technical today, it’s important to know that every disc has a stability rating and flight numbers, which give you an idea of how the disc will behave in flight. Stability refers to how much a disc will turn or fade during its flight. A more stable disc will fade harder at the end of its flight, while an understable disc might turn more during its flight. But more on this another day.
For new players, midranges and putters generally have more controlled, predictable flights, which is why they’re perfect for learning the basics before moving on to more specialised discs. We created our Beginner Disc Golf Set exactly for this reason, two amazing, locally-made discs to introduce you to the sport. When you build your confidence and control, adding a driver to your line up will be all the more satisfying (but we won’t stop you if you want to go straight to a driver as see what they can do - after all, that's what we did when we started).
